SING a SONG of GLADNESS!

Our focus of late has been regarding the students taking in the beauty of the individual student and helping to create a tapestry of diverse understanding and solution for all challenges we face.  Our theme of storm and change for our concert has descended on us in reflection and appreciation for the complexities of contributing to the furtherance of the human condition. We must sing the song of others when they forget theirs, and allow others to do the same.  Strength comes through shared need and fulfillment.

Our big concert is just two weeks from Thursday!  We look forward to sharing our music with you, as well as celebrating our 12 graduating seniors!

BANQUET FORMS are due on Monday.  Please be sure to get a quick turn around on those orders.  Once again, the tickets are $18 (free ticket to any student in good standing) and the banquet is held at Burnt Hickory Baptist Church beginning at 5:30.  It should conclude by 8pm.
Upcoming Academic Assessments:
4/26 Open Mic – Last chance to fulfill that GMEA Standard!
5/2 Last CLASS day for Musictheory.net testing out
5/14 Interval Quiz
5/16&17 Senior Finals for those not exempted
5/21&22 Undergrad Finals for those not exempted
Coming May Events:
5/7 5:30pm Our Spring Banquet Celebration
5/9 Spring Concert 5:30 Call, Concert @ 7pm
5/14 7:45am Officer Brunch! (Benji cooks and bakes for the officers)
5/21 Baccalaureate (Nia and Marylou singing)
5/23 Graduation (seniors singing)
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have.  The boosters and I are happy to help in whatever way we may.

It’s been quite a ride these last few weeks!
There have been changes to the orchestra, band and choral programs, and the spirit of the artistic community has been heartening through the process.  I want to thank all of you that have so kindly and generously written to the district, myself, and/or emailed the aforementioned regarding the attempt to keep the program at full-time status.  Thankfully, our faithful boosters will ease the singer’s transition, continuing the strong vision for the program here at Hillgrove.
I hope to help the newly hired director transition to the position as smoothly as possible, working with Ms Stewart to bring them in throughout the month of May.  I have submitted my resignation to the superintendent and we will be moving to San Diego the end of May.  I will carry the richness of music made and the kindness of so many of you to the next vocational chapter.
But, MOST importantly, we must keep the focus where it needs to be: finishing strong and celebrating music and it’s impact on our lives culminating in our concert on May 9th.  We have LGPE pieces, jazz, pop, sea shanties, a senior operatic duet, and our own Hawkapellas to feature.
Enjoy your break, and I’ll see your students in April, and thank you for your presence and continued support in May as we bring honor to our beloved seniors.  We want to pack the house for our celebration and enjoy the beautiful music within and around us!
Warmly,
Sarah Benjamin

SPRING BREAK COUNTDOWN!

Good Day to you all!
Open Mic was today: one of my favorite things we do! Students singing solos, duets, accompanying themselves on the piano, a capella or with a track. Ms Megan McLane even performed an original song today, singing and playing. It’s great fun to hear what they bring to their classmates.

Braves Game is Off:  Please know how grateful we are that so many of you were involved with this endeavor.  Selling 250 tickets is a huge goal, and I believe the Braves are revisiting their requirements given that so many schools have been unable to meet this requirements.  Refunds are coming home with your students today.  We’re disappointed, but at least we have Who’s Who next week!

Who’s Who Ceremony: The men and select will be singing for the Who’s Who Ceremony held here at Hillgrove.  We’ll bring the National Anthem, and our very own Literary Women’s Trio will sing Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors”.  It’ll be a lovely morning Wednesday.  I hope you are able to attend.

Upcoming Dates:  Please be sure the following dates are on the calendar.

4/11 Melodic Dictation Quiz

4/26 Last Open Mic

5/7 Spring Banquet (if you paid dues, you have a ticket!)

5/9 Our Spring/Seniors Honor’s Concert (all choirs) (5/10 Food Day)

5/20 Officer Brunch (7am in Choir Room)

5/21 Baccalaureate (Nia and Marylou singing the Lakme Duet)

5/23  Graduation (Senior Song and National Anthem)

Have a lovely weekend!  Just ONE MORE WEEK!!

Warmly,

Ms Benjamin

Freaky Friday and IRELAND ’20!

Good Thursday evening, all!
If you have not yet seen Freaky Friday, we DO hope you’ll catch one of their final shows this weekend: Friday and Saturday at 7pm, Saturday matinee at 2pm.  These pics were taken during our final run through last night. A fantastic group of kids, to be sure!  It has been a true pleasure to work with Mr. Adam Sechelski and his wife, Sarah.

IRELAND ’20! planning has begun!  EF Tours are making it all so easy in that our trip WON’T be cancelled as we’re combined with other schools.  There are many, many advantages to be had with working with EF Tours.  PLEASE COME THURSDAY NIGHT, 3/21 @6:30 for MORE INFO!  All are welcome, including incoming 8th graders! We are partnering with EF tours, traveling on a custom designed tour specifically for our choral students here at Hillgrove. We will be experiencing both countryside and city sidewalk in the beautiful country, visiting places like Dublin, Galway, Killarney and Cork. We’ll be able to see the green rolling hills, history and music and folklore come alive.

We will be hosting an interest meeting on Thursday March 21st at 6:30pm in the Hillgrove Choral Room. I hope you will come and learn more. There is limited space on the trip, and spaces fill extremely fast and on a first come first served basis. Please RSVP at https://rsvp.eftours.com/atthdt6

There are many students who have yet to pay dues.  Please help the good of the order by selling a box of chocolates to make up the difference!  There are 11 boxes left: $25 to the person who sells the most before the concert or until they run out, whichever comes first!

Hawk Hour today was for those who were struggling with the sightreadingfactory.com platform and/or musictheory.net.  Please encourage your student to get in their late assignments.  Many still haven’t even begun their 3 required sightreadings that just take minutes to complete.  Others are missing their Cobb District Writing assignment.  Please get them in immediately.
We were pleased to have Mr. Matthew Elsey in to help Select with their modern piece they’re singing in May.  As a music education student, Mr. Elsey is taking care of observations, but we were just thrilled to have him back once more!
Just 2 wks before Spring Break: Let’s push hard to make May our finest concert yet!
Warmly,

Ms Benjamin
